Minimum insurance requirements in Georgia

On Behalf of | Jan 31, 2025 | Car Accidents

Motor vehicle insurance is critical to protect drivers and occupants of vehicles. While it won’t prevent crashes from occurring, it can help to get necessary expenses covered if there’s a crash.

Georgia has mandatory minimum insurance coverage amounts for bodily injury liability and property damage liability. It’s possible for drivers to obtain higher limits for these two types of insurance. Property damage liability must be at least $25,000 per accident. Bodily injury liability must be at least $25,000 per person with at least a $50,000 cap per accident.

Optional insurance for vehicles in Georgia

On top of the liability insurance, drivers also have the option to obtain insurance that protects their own vehicle. This includes collision and comprehensive coverage. While these aren’t required by law, many drivers opt to obtain this coverage as protection for their vehicles. Additionally, drivers may opt to obtain uninsured motorist insurance, which offers protection against drivers who don’t have adequate insurance.

Having the proper insurance is critical for all drivers because it provides coverage when a crash occurs. Victims of crashes have the option of turning to insurance companies to recover the financial damages from expenses, such as those for medical care, that are related to the wreck.

There may be times when limits might run out before the bills are fully paid, so those victims may seek compensation through a personal injury claim. Because insurance companies may try to shortchange them and personal injury claims are often complex, victims should work with someone familiar with these matters to help protect their rights.
