How to take photos or videos after a car accident

On Behalf of | Jan 15, 2026 | Car Accidents

If you get involved in a car accident, one important step is to take photos or videos at the accident scene. This is not necessarily the most important step. Your first priority is to seek medical attention if anyone was injured. But after that, photos and videos can help substantially.

Even if you know immediately that the other driver was at fault, they may not be truthful when speaking with authorities. If the driver denies liability, your case becomes more complicated. Having photos and videos can help you prove who was at fault so that you can seek appropriate compensation.

3 types of pictures

So how should you approach taking photos after a crash? There are three main types to consider:

  • Wide photos of the entire accident scene, showing how the crash occurred and where the vehicles were positioned after they stopped.
  • Close-up photos of the vehicles, showing any significant damage or injuries. This can help demonstrate responsibility for the accident and connect the damage and injuries to that crash.
  • Photos of identifying information from the other driver, such as insurance paperwork or a driver’s license. Drivers are often instructed to exchange information at the scene, and a smartphone makes it easy to do this quickly.

Having these three types of photos can help significantly. You may also want to look for other types of evidence, such as dashcam footage, security camera footage, witness statements and more.

Seeking compensation

If the other driver was responsible for the accident, they may owe you compensation for pain and suffering, medical bills, lost wages and the like. Take the time to carefully review the legal options available to you moving forward.
